Appeal Policy
Updated July 2025
Appeals Procedure for Internally Assessed Marks (GCSE/GCE Coursework)
The O'Brien International School
Principles:
-
Staff mark controlled assessments/coursework fairly, consistently, and in line with the relevant awarding body specifications.
-
Marking is conducted by trained teachers; internal moderation ensures consistency.
-
Candidates may appeal only the assessment process, not the actual mark submitted.
Key Points of the Appeals Process:
-
Deadline for Appeal:
Must be submitted at least two weeks before the final written exam of the series. -
How to Appeal:
Written appeal submitted by the candidate’s parent/carer to the Examinations Officer. -
Investigation:
Conducted by a senior staff member (Assistant or Deputy Headteacher) not involved in the original assessment. -
Focus of Appeal:
To determine if internal assessment procedures complied with awarding body requirements. -
Outcome Notification:
The outcome will be communicated in writing, including any actions taken or communications with the awarding body. -
Record Keeping:
-
Outcome reported to the Headteacher and recorded as a complaint.
-
Written records are available to awarding bodies upon request.
-
Any irregularities found will be reported to the awarding body.
-
-
Fees:
-
€75 non-refundable administration fee to start the appeal.
-
Awarding body fees for formal board appeals are separate and must be paid in advance.
-
Important Note:
Final marks may be adjusted by the awarding body during external moderation, a process outside the school’s control and not subject to this appeal procedure.
