Policy Aims
The aims of this policy are to:
-
Ensure the health and safety of all staff, pupils, and visitors.
-
Ensure that all staff are aware of their responsibilities regarding first aid and health and safety.
-
Provide a clear framework for responding to incidents, as well as recording and reporting outcomes.
-
Ensure there is an adequate supply of medical materials in all first aid kits and that contents are regularly replenished.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Director
The Director is responsible for the implementation of this policy, including:
-
Ensuring all staff are aware of and follow first aid procedures.
-
Ensuring that appropriate risk assessments are carried out and necessary measures are put in place.
In-School Procedures
In the Event of an Accident or Injury
-
The closest staff member will assess the seriousness of the injury.
-
If minor and appropriate, immediate remedial care will be administered by that staff member.
-
If deemed necessary, the staff member will seek assistance from Central Salud in San Miguel de Salinas, where qualified emergency medical cover is available 24 hours a day.
-
If a pupil is too unwell to remain in school, a parent or their nominated representative will be contacted to collect the child.
-
Upon arrival, the staff member will update the parent/representative and suggest potential next steps. It is then the parent/representative’s responsibility to decide on the next course of action.
-
If emergency services are required, staff will attempt to contact the pupil’s parents or emergency contacts as soon as practically possible.
Accident Reporting
-
The attending member of staff will complete an Accident Report Form on the same day or as soon as is reasonably practical after the incident.
-
A copy of the report will be added to the pupil’s educational record.
Off-Site Procedures
When taking pupils off school premises, staff must ensure they have:
-
A school mobile phone.
-
A fully stocked portable first aid kit.
-
Information about pupils’ specific medical needs.
-
Up-to-date contact details for pupils' parents or guardians.
Risk Assessments
-
A relevant staff member will complete a risk assessment prior to any educational visit that takes pupils off school premises.
